More than 3 people have lost their lives and over 80 people injured when explosives stored at a private residence detonated in Nigeria’s southwest Oyo state, its governor said on Wednesday. In a statement, the governor, Seyi Makinde, said there were more than two deaths while more than 77 people were treated for injuries, most of them being discharged.
Makinde said search and rescue operations were underway and the state government would provide temporary accommodation for those who lost their homes due to environmental degradation.
GOVERNMENT APPREHENDS CULPRITS.
The government of Oyo state has said that the explosives, which caused Tuesday night’s explosion on Dejo Oyelese Street, Adeyi Avenue, Old Bodija, Ibadan. The governor called for calm, assuring that the state government had been on top of the situation and that it was leaving no stone unturned regarding the search and rescue of victims at the rubble of the incident as well as the welfare of victims and the security of their properties and to catch the criminal elements
. A statement by the special adviser (media) to the state governor, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, quoted Mr Makinde to have stated that as part of measures by the government to address the situation, it had set up an Emergency Operation Centre to oversee search and rescue of the havoc of environmental degradation.
On his part, the governor of OGUN STATE, DAPO ABIODUN, has commiserated with his Oyo State counterpart, Engr. Seyi Makinde, over the explosion that rocked Ibadan explosion some parts of the old Bodija area of the town on Tuesday night, described it as a monumental tragedy. He also said that it is due to neglect and criminality.
He added that Ibadan is strategic for every Yoruba person given its historic importance, adding that the governments of the SouthWest governors and states would not be deterred by the tragic incident but would “jointly intensify security across our states to ensure that our people are safe and secure, even as Lagos state governor extended his sympathy to oyo state government.
TINUBU ORDERS PROBE.
President Tinubu has ordered that a thorough investigation be carried out into an explosion that rocked Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday.
Briefing State House correspondents shortly after the meeting, the Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru, said FEC also set up a committee to look into the issues of environmental degradation and deforestation.
He noted that the activities of illegal miners pose a huge challenge to Nigeria, hence the committee to come up with a roadmap for tackling the menace.
