The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed three separate appeals brought before it by some governorship candidates seeking nullification of the election of Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno on account of alleged certificate forgery. Justice Uwani Abba-Aji dismissed the appeals of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Young Progressives Party (YPP), and the Action Alliance (AC) based on the non-qualification of the governor over allegations of certificate forgery, which the governor denied.
The court also described the petitions filed by John Udoedehe of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and Akanimo Udofia of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against Eno as unmeritorious and lacking substance.
Counsel in the matters had made spirited, futile attempts to convince the apex court that Emo Eno Bassey and Bassey Eno Emo were not the same and, as such, that the governor allegedly forged his Secondary School Certificate.
Their arguments, especially forgery allegations, did not go well with the justices, who questioned the lawyers on whether the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) had given evidence to establish the criminal allegations.
Upon admission that WAEC did not testify in the matter, the lawyers opted and separately withdrew the appeals.
The electoral body had declared Eno as the winner of the governorship election in Akwa Ibom, saying he won with a total of 356,348 votes. Albert came second with 136,262 votes while Udofia came third with 129,602 votes.
