The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday announced the suspension of accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo. It followed an investigative report by Daily Nigerian Newspaper titled “How Daily Nigerian reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks
”.According to the government, the suspension persists pending the outcome of an investigation involving the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education of Nigeria and the two countries as well as the Department of State Security Services and the National Youths Service Corps.“The Ministry therefore wishes to call on the General Public to support its efforts, show understanding, and provide useful information that will assist the Committee in finding lasting solutions in order to prevent further occurrence.
- The online newspaper revealed how beneficiaries of these substandard certificates compete for jobs and other opportunities with hard-working graduates who undergo academic rigors for at least four years to obtain their degrees.
- It also reported that the requirements for the fake degree are O-level certificates – fake or genuine – and money, which vary depending on the course, urgency, and class of degree.
- Having met with an agent, the reporter obtained the certificate and transcript of Ecole Superieure de Gestion et de Technologies, ESGT, Cotonou, Benin Republic, on February 17, 2023.
A former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed also in 2020 noted that certain Nigerians were purchasing fake degrees from degree mills in and out of Nigeria.
In September 2023, a newspaper exposed a certain London Graduate School selling fake honorary degrees to Nigerians.
AFFECTED STUDENTS LAMENTS
The Students of Ecole Superieure De Gestion Et De Technologies University, Cotonou, Benin Republic, Prinz-Ufokimo Ime Idio, have expressed disappointment with the recent suspension of evaluation of degree certificates from his school and others from the country and Togo.
They said
It is just a bad way to end our year because all of us were enjoying our Christmas holidays only for us to just see an investigation by a reporter about the so-called certificate from our school. We did not receive it very well as students.
“it was just a way of someone trying to trend on social media but when we woke up on the 2nd of January and saw news of the suspension of certificate accreditation in Benin Republic; that was when the whole thing dawned on us,” They said.
He pleaded with the Federal Government to tender justice with mercy because there are still some competent students out there who actually acquired their certificate through a normal academic process without cutting corners.
SUSPEND CERTIFICATE FROM CICAGO-ATIKU HITS TINUBU.
The presidential candidate PDP, in the 2023 electionALHAJI ATIKU ABUBAKAR, has slammed the federal government’s suspension of degree certificate evaluation and accreditation from the Benin Republic and Togo, calling it a “deceptive” move that ignores a bigger problem.
Universities in Benin and Togo are not the only ones culpable in certificate racketeering,” Rasheeth wrote. “Suspending their accreditation is nothing but deception! This isn’t the first time FG is doing that! he said
He pointed to Chicago State University (CSU) and its affiliates as a prime example of institutions allegedly involved in “nefarious means and unconscionable methods” of issuing degrees.
FG SHUTS 18 UNIVERSITY CAMPUS OVER FAKE DEGREE
The Federal Government has banned 18 foreign universities from operating in NigeriaThey are five universities from the United States, six from the United Kingdom, and three Ghanaian tertiary institutions.
The affected schools are the University of Applied Sciences & Management, Port Novo, Republic of Benin, or any of its other campuses in Nigeria; Volta University College, Ho, Volta Region, Ghana, or any of its other campuses in Nigeria; the International University, Missouri, USA, Kano, and Lagos Study Centres, or any of its campuses in Nigeria and the Collumbus University, United Kingdom operating anywhere in Nigeria.
The list also included Tiu International University, UK; Pebbles University, UK, operating anywhere in Nigeria; London External Studies UK operating anywhere in Nigeria; Pilgrims University operating anywhere in Nigeria; West African Christian University operating anywhere in Nigeria; EC-Council University, USA, Ikeja, Lagos Study Centre and Concept College/Universities (London) Ilorin or any of its campuses in Nigeria.Houdegbe North American University campuses in Nigeria; Irish University Business School London, operating anywhere in Nigeria; University of Education, Winneba Ghana, operating anywhere in Nigeria; Cape Coast University, Ghana, operating anywhere in Nigeria; African University Cooperative Development, Cotonou, Benin Republic, operating anywhere in Nigeria; Pacific Western University, Denver, Colorado, Owerri Study Centre and Evangel University of America & Chudick Management Academic, Lagos.
