During Tuesday’s inauguration in the Grand Kremlin Palace for a record fifth presidential term, Putin said Russia would pass through the current “difficult” period stronger and emerge victorious.
Putin’s best-known opponent, Alexei Navalny, died suddenly in an Arctic penal colony a month earlier, and other leading critics are in jail or have been forced to flee abroad.
Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, on Tuesday, urged supporters to keep up the fight against Putin, who she described as “a liar, a thief, and a murderer”.
The United States, which said it did not consider his re-election free and fair, stayed away from Tuesday’s inauguration ceremony.
Britain, Canada, and most European Union nations also decided to boycott the swearing-in, but France said it would send its ambassador.
Putin, in power as president or prime minister since 1999, begins his new mandate more than two years after he sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine, where Russian forces have regained the initiative after a series of reversals and are seeking to advance further in the east. Putin said he wanted to “bow” before Russia’s soldiers there and declared in his inauguration speech that his landslide re-election in March was proof the country was united and on the right track. Vladimir Putin takes 5th term.
During Tuesday’s inauguration in the Grand Kremlin Palace for a record fifth presidential term, Putin said Russia would pass through the current “difficult” period stronger and emerge victorious.
He said talks on strategic nuclear stability with the West were also possible, but only on equal terms.
“We are a united and great people and together we will overcome all obstacles, we will bring to life everything we have planned. Together, we will be victorious,” Putin said.
“You, citizens of Russia, have confirmed the correctness of the country’s course. This is of great importance right now, when we are faced with serious challenges,” he told dignitaries in a gilded Kremlin hall where a trumpet fanfare sounded to greet his arrival.
“I see in this a deep understanding of our common historical goals, a determination to adamantly defend our choice, our values, freedom, and the national interests of Russia.” Vladimir Putin takes 5th term.
